U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is freezing her eggs and is taking the public along for the ride. In a multi-chaptered, uncharacteristically personal Instagram story, the 36-year-old second-term Democrat opened up Saturday night about the extremely “personal” and “sensitive” decision, which she said had been brewing for a while, and shared a video of her administering her first injection. “I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, I feel,” Ocasio-Cortez said about the process and the expense. “And sometimes it can feel very daunting.” She had decided to go public, despite the potential consequences, because “I think we need to show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choice.” Women’s fertility gradually decreases starting at about age 35, with a sharper drop around age 37, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, and freezing one’s eggs before age 37 “generally offers a better chance of future pregnancy success.” Ocasio-Cortez, who first won office in 2018 at age 29, said she had shared her decision partly to help shed light on the whys and wherefores faced by women of reproductive age.
