Students to research, document Alabama art collections in new Mellon-backed course

This fall a new hands-on, research-driven course will be offered in which students will work with Troy University’s art collections to research their histories, and the people, communities and cultural contexts connected to them.  Art, Memory and Cultural Documentation (ART 3343), will be taught by Mellon Fellow Will Jacks, an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Design, as part of the Mellon-funded initiative “(Re)reading Alabama’s Cultural Archives: Connecting Place to its Multitudes.”  “Rather than approaching artworks only through lectures, this experiential learning environment asks students work directly with the artwork, researching their histories and the people and communities around them,” Jacks said. “Then they will take that research and build contextual content around it through photographs, audio interviews, and video recordings with individuals and organizations that are somehow connected to and impacted by the art.” Dr. Priya Menon, the Mellon grant’s Project Lead, said the course is one of five being developed through the grant to deepen students’ understanding of the culture of Alabama. While the broader initiative spans multiple disciplines, ART 3343 focuses specifically on Alabama art through collections housed at TROY’s International Art Center. “It addresses a clear gap by foregrounding local and regional archives that have remained underexamined, while

Former Monarch Drew Williamson Reflects On Final Four Runs, National Championship

By Harry Minium NORFOLK, Va. – Few college basketball players or coaches ever get to participate in a Final Four. After all, only four of the 316 Division I teams make it each season. You’re lucky if you get to the Big Dance once. You’re in rarefied air if you go a second time and even more so, when your team wins a national title. Former Old Dominion guard Drew Williamson has been there twice – in 2023 as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic and then again earlier this spring, when Michigan got to the national championship game in Indianapolis. The Owls lost to San Diego State in the 2023 semifinals. The Wolverines did much better, beating UConn, 69-63, in the final to win the national championship. Williamson, 41, says he didn’t take a minute at either Final Four for granted. “Whether you play or coach college basketball, you always look forward to and remember March Madness. And you look forward to watching One Shining Moment,” Williamson said of the emotional video with tournament highlights that CBS produces and plays minutes after the championship game. “The surreal thing is to watch One Shining Moment from the stage. Outside of

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After leading the University of Iowa men’s basketball program to its first Elite Eight appearance in 39 years, head coach Ben McCollum has signed a contract extension through 2032, the announcement was made Monday by Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair Beth Goetz. “This extension reflects not only our recent success, but the strong alignment we have with Coach McCollum’s vision for Iowa basketball,” said Goetz. “The culture he and his staff have developed, the way they represent our institution, and the connection created with the Hawkeye community have been incredibly meaningful. “I have tremendous confidence in the direction we are headed under Ben’s leadership. We are excited to continue that momentum and pursue even greater success together.” During his first season in Iowa City, McCollum led the program to 24 victories and the team went on a magical NCAA Tournament run to captivate Hawkeye Nation. Iowa defeated three higher seeded teams during March Madness, downing No. 8 Clemson, No. 1 Florida and

King Charles’ tribute to David Attenborough is pure joy – Aleteia

The monarch let the animal kingdom take center stage in celebrating David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. There are some people who become woven so deeply into the fabric of our lives that it is hard to remember a world without them. And for generations, Sir David Attenborough has been one of those rare figures. His voice has accompanied childhoods, Sunday evenings, family living rooms, and quiet moments of wonder before the natural world. Therefore, this week, as the beloved broadcaster celebrated his 100th birthday at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the tributes could easily have become overly grand or sentimental. Instead, the BBC and King Charles III chose something unexpectedly charming: a joyful little film in which the king’s birthday card to Sir David was delivered not by royal courier, but by animals themselves. The premise was delightfully absurd in the best possible way. Filmed at Balmoral in Scotland, the king is shown carefully writing a heartfelt card to his old friend, recalling that the pair first met back in 1958. “Over those decades you have revealed the beauty and wonders of nature to audiences around the world in new and marvelous ways,” the monarch wrote. But then disaster strikes. A fallen

About Last Night: Zach Benson’s chirps inspire Jakub Dobes in Buffalo blowout

For the first time in these playoffs, the Canadiens won a game that wasn’t a nail-biter. They cruised to a 5-1 victory in Game 2 over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night at KeyBank Center. Alex Newhook continued to make his mark in the postseason with two goals. Nick Suzuki now has goals in three consecutive games after scoring an empty-netter. Goaltender Jakub Dobes made 29 saves and had little patience for Sabre forward Zach Benson trying to get him off his game. Following a loss post-season, the rookie netminder has a perfect 4-0 Record, 1.49 goals against average and a .946 save percentage. Cole Caufield failed to light the lamp, but he was a post away in the third period from hitting the scoresheet. He stared in astonishment as the shot somehow stayed out of the net. Before we get to the highlights, were Newhook and his teammates amped in the dressing room before puck drop? They were. Newhook brought that same energy from the get-go, scoring on the game’s first shot at 1:36. Less than four minutes later, defenceman Mike Matheson broke a 16-game goalless drought in the playoffs to give the Habs a 2-0 lead. There was
