He took over as safety director in February 2022 after 34 years with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department. “September 1st, 2023 will be my last day as the Director of Public Safety for the City of Toledo,” Byrd wrote. “It will be a bittersweet departure. I am thankful for my 35 years of service to the community. However, I look forward to new adventures that come with retirement.
