Cardinals bench coach Daniel Descalso brings bagel-making hobby to clubhouse

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Daniel Descalso is known in St. Louis for being part of the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series team and now as Oli Marmol’s bench coach. But there’s something he’s known for outside the stadium, too. Descalso makes bagels from scratch and brings them to the clubhouse. “People will ask, hey, is tomorrow bagel day?” Descalso said. He named his starter in honor of his Italian heritage and calls his bagel operation ScalsDough, a play on his baseball nickname. “My first year coaching, I brought them in, there was positive feedback, I’ve been making them ever since,” Descalso said. Descalso played 10 seasons in the majors, including stops with the Rockies, Diamondbacks and Cubs. He’s made St. Louis home. After experiencing a World Series with the Cardinals, he’s now part of this new era of Cardinals baseball. “You get here, it’s the Cardinals franchise with great history and tradition, to come full circle and be asked back as a coach…it’s been a lot of fun,” Descalso said. “For us to get off to a good start with these young guys and build momentum, it’s been fun to watch.” Copyright 2026 KMOV.
