Demolition of Reading landmark completed

The demolition of the former East End Athletic Association clubhouse, also known as the Mineral Spring Hotel, has been completed. Demolition began in July after City Council voted in April to demolish the fire-ravaged building in city-owned Mineral Spring Park. The former clubhouse on Glen Road was damaged beyond repair in a March fire. Built in the early 1800s, the once-popular hotel was a place of political discourse and a popular eatery in the 19th century, said George M. Meiser IX, who with his wife, Gloria Jean, coauthored the “Passing Scene” series of books on Berks County history. Leased to the East End Athletic Club in 1937, the city-owned building had been vacant and deteriorating since the club was evicted under Mayor Wally Scott’s administration in 2017. The club relocated to a building on Laurel Street. The demolition of the former Mineral Spring Hotel and East End Athletic Club has been completed following the March fire that had damaged the building beyond repair.
