Facebook Live video gives glimpse of medical pod at 201 Poplar – FOX 13 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Facebook Live video provided a peek at conditions inside the medical pod at 201 Poplar. It’s another glimpse at problems inside of the jail.  The video sparked an internal investigation. The man who recorded that video, now released from custody, Derrick McDonald, told FOX13 Investigates that he’s been paralyzed for the past decade. Records show he was booked into the Shelby County Jail for drug possession after a traffic stop. McDonald claims he was neglected by medical staff.  “(Expletive) been down here two days. I ain’t got changed. No, none of that (expletive). Got me sitting in (expletive) and piss,” McDonald said in the Facebook Live video.  He said he spent those two days helpless and unable to care for himself.  “If I don’t get up out of here, I’ll get sick,” McDonald said. “I’ll get bedsores. I was hoping the roaches weren’t going to crawl on me while I was lying here.”  In the five-minute video, McDonald described not being monitored by staff. At one point, he points out a blind man wandering around.  “They got the blind man, the inmates helping him, man. They can’t even help that man,” McDonald said in the video.
