Facebook users begin receiving payments from privacy settlement – WGME

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — Facebook users are starting to receive payments this week as part of a multi-million dollar settlement related to a user privacy scandal. Concerns arose that the payments might be a scam, but the settlement is legitimate. The settlement stems from multiple lawsuits filed against Facebook following the 2016 election. The social media giant was accused of allowing user information to be accessed by third parties without permission, including the firm Cambridge Analytica. The settlement was finalized in May. Now, two years later, the money is being distributed. The total settlement was for $725 million, but the amount each person receives depends on how long they were a Facebook user during that period.
