Ghostbusters Fan Pages Return to Facebook Following Long-Term Takedowns

A few years back, we reported on the growing issue of Ghostbusters fan pages being unpublished on Facebook without warning. Meta claimed these removals were tied to Community Standard violations, but many affected pages were long-standing franchise groups engaging primarily in charitable work. While some pages were later restored through appeals, the overall situation remained frustrating, with removals believed to be triggered by automated algorithms mistaking fan-run pages as nefarious. In today’s update, while the problem hasn’t disappeared entirely, the last few weeks have marked a significant step in the right direction. Dozens of Ghostbusters-centric pages, especially those run by charity-focused franchise groups, have been reinstated and relisted. Among the most recent is Germany’s international fan franchise, We Are Ghostbusters Germany. Despite their page being clearly labeled fan-run, it was removed last week, presumably by Meta’s backend AI. Fortunately, the takedown was short-lived, and the page was restored within about a week. Other franchises, however, faced far more extended downtimes. Groups like the Louisiana Ghostbusters, Alabama Ghostbusters, and Wisconsin Ghostbusters saw their Facebook pages deactivated for up to a year and a half, leading to significant challenges in promoting events and raising awareness for charitable causes.
