After her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died in 1905, Anna campaigned for a special day to honour mothers and their sacrifices. Ann had earlier organised “Mothers’ Work Clubs” during the American Civil War to help wounded soldiers. The first official Mother’s Day celebration was held in 1908 at a church in Grafton.
