LinkedIn last month started rolling out its Clubhouse-like offering, Audio Events, which allows users to broadcast audio-only during scheduled live events. Moreover, the Mark Cuban-backed Fireside app, which allows users to broadcast video or audio-only live, entered talks to raise about $25 million after launching in October, TechCrunch reported in late February. Meanwhile, Facebook was offering to pay influencers five-figure checks to host sessions on its Clubhouse competitor Live Audio Rooms, The Information reported in November. These developments only bring back to mind the great cooldown of Clubhouse, the platform that helped catalyze the Silicon Valley social audio craze in the first place. While Clubhouse’s monthly global download total reached as high as 9.6 million in February 2021, the social audio app failed to match that total in any month during the remainder of that year, according to Sensor Tower.
