After a week of terrible PR, Facebook has ‘paused’ its plans for Instagram Kids. The new service, for 10-to-12 year olds, would have had no ads and more parental control. We might think: ‘Phew.’ But it’s a missed chance. In Ireland, 84pc of children between eight and 12 already use social media, with the full knowledge of their parents. But because they have to lie about their age to get on to it, they get adult-themed ads and friend suggestions.
