By BARBARA RYBOLT December 24, 2020 at 2:16 PM BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — Monday night, almost 500 people joined a virtual Board of Education meeting, the last one of the year. The meeting was being held so the board could approve the superintendent’s plans for opening school after the Winter Break. But that wasn’t what drew the crowd. For the most part, the large group joined the Zoom meeting to either learn more or to speak about an Instagram post by David Urbanke, a former student at Governor Livingston High School, who posted a personal story letting people know why he dropped out of school in 2011 and (GL) to raise awareness of the “discrimination, homophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, xenophobia, and more” at the school. His post produced a huge response from former and current students in the district and others, both online and at the meeting, as well as a petition on change.org to change the culture of the school. As of Thursday morning 2,405 people had signed the petition.
