Iowa to receive more than $135M in landmark Facebook and Instagram settlement – KCRG

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird says Iowa will receive more than $135 million as part of a settlement with Meta. In Wednesday’s announcement, Meta will pay $17 billion and add child safety measures to its Facebook and Instagram platforms to end a landmark trial over teen social media addiction and settle claims filed by 47 states. Bird said this is one of the biggest settlements in state consumer protection history. Iowa will receive its payout in ten installments. Meta also settled connected claims that Meta shared private Facebook user information with third parties. That settlement is around $9 million of the total payout to Iowa. “After today’s win, Iowa children will be safer online. Our victory is a win for kids and for the families that love them,” Bird said in a statement. “And this is just the beginning in my fight against Big Tech to ensure Iowa children are protected.” The settlement is a fraction of Meta’s 2025 revenue of $201 billion.
