Chennai: Earlier this week, Sanjay Subrahmanyam posted a short snippet on Instagram. The video begins with an alapanai — 23 seconds long and in Mukhari ragam — that drenches weary souls in bliss before ending with an anecdote. The story dates to a 1990 concert when a 22-year-old Sanjay broke into an impromptu musical piece that convinced senior critic N M Narayanan — known for leaving concerts just before the ‘tani avartanams’ — to walk back to his seat and stay for the rest of the show. “These are small victories we savour in our concerts,” he ends it.‘On that Note’ is a series of such snippets from Sanjay’s life. The musician, along with Bhargavii Mani of Edge Design House started creating short episodes for digital audiences at the beginning of last year after the pandemic.
