Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday sues Snapchat owner Snap over child safety

PENNSYLVANIA (WBNG) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has filed a lawsuit against Snap, Inc., alleging the company fails to protect children and warn users about the addictive nature of Snapchat. The legal complaint seeks to force the social media giant to implement stronger safety measures and accurately represent its platform in app stores. State prosecutors claim the company lies about the frequency of adult themes like nudity, suicidal ideation and drug abuse to secure an age-appropriate rating. According to the lawsuit, these deceptive practices allow the app to bypass crucial parental controls. “Snapchat has designed its platform to lure children into constant, compulsive use that is detrimental to healthy adolescent development,” Sunday said. “This lawsuit demands that Snapchat finally admit publicly that its platform is highly addictive and that it takes real action to keep kids safe.” Specific features such as disappearing messages and SnapStreaks are designed to encourage compulsive use among teenagers.
