CONSUMER NOTICE – July 17, 2026 Recent storms are a reminder that severe weather can leave behind more than property damage. It can also create opportunities for scammers. The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) urges homeowners and renters to use caution when hiring contractors, responding to unsolicited repair offers, or sharing personal and insurance information following a storm. Following severe weather, scammers often take advantage of the urgency homeowners feel to make repairs. They may pressure consumers to act quickly, request large upfront payments, or offer to handle the insurance claim on the homeowner’s behalf before the full extent of the damage has been evaluated. Watch for These Warning Signs Door-to-door contractors offering immediate repairs or claiming to have “extra materials” from another job. Pressure to sign a contract or make an immediate decision. Requests for full payment or a large cash deposit before work begins. Requests to sign over your insurance claim or benefits. Offers to waive or cover your insurance deductible. Refusal to provide proof of licensing, insurance, or references.
