There’ll be many wondering whether that match might have taken a different path had Shelton converted any of the three set points he had in the opening chapter. We’ll never know. Alcaraz will be pleased – and a touch relieved – to have wrapped that up in four sets. It’s the sort of test at this stage of a Grand Slam that sharpens you up nicely.
