Surat: What began as a friendship on Snapchat allegedly spiralled into sexual assault, blackmail and the loss of 36 tolas of gold, with a Surat woman accusing a 23-year-old man of repeatedly exploiting her financially and physically over several months. Kapodra police registered an FIR against one Tonish Padshala based on a complaint filed by a 32-year-old woman who alleged that he raped her, repeatedly threatened her and extorted money and gold after the two got to know each other on Snapchat in Feb 2026. According to the complaint, the accused told the woman he was facing a cybercrime case and needed Rs 1.80 lakh to resolve the matter. The woman allegedly provided the money. A few days later, he claimed his lawyer required additional funds, after which she gave him a gold ring. Police said the accused later visited the woman’s residence under the pretext of returning the ring. The woman alleged that she was alone at home when he raped her and threatened to share their Snapchat conversations with her husband if she spoke about the rape.
