KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A University of Tennessee freshman is suing a foreign tech company for allegedly using a TikTok video she posted from her high school graduation party to promote its dating app. Kaeyln Lunglhofer is suing Quantum Communications. The company based in the British Virgin Islands, along with its Chinese affiliates, operate an online social media and messaging application called “Meete.” The lawsuit alleges it ran suggestive ads using stolen TikTok videos, and she only found out about it because a classmate told her he saw the ad on Snapchat. “I get sent a video where they’re making me look like a prostitute, and that was horrible,” Lunglhofer said. “I felt so embarrassed and mortified.” Lunglhofer is a nursing student who started using TikTok to go live with her friend on the platform.
