WhatsApp rolls out passkey-encrypted backups for simplified chat security – Varindia

New feature enhances user privacy with biometric and device-based verification options Meta Platforms has unveiled a new security feature for WhatsApp users, introducing passkey encryption for chat backups to strengthen data privacy. The new system replaces traditional password-based protection with biometric or device-level verification, making it easier and safer for users to secure their backups. Enhanced security through biometric verification With this rollout, WhatsApp users will no longer need to remember passwords or 64-digit encryption keys to protect their chat histories. Instead, they can encrypt backups using their fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock code. This ensures that only the account owner can decrypt and access stored data. According to Meta, users can activate the feature by navigating to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encrypted Backup within WhatsApp. Once enabled, all chat backups will be encrypted using passkeys, providing stronger protection even if the device is lost or stolen. Previously, users had to create a password or store a long encryption key to secure their backups. If either was forgotten, recovery was impossible — not even WhatsApp Support could retrieve the data. The new passkey system eliminates this risk while maintaining the same level of end-to-end security.
