Grandville orthodontist arrested in Frankfort on alleged child exploitation charges

(Philip Gawel/WWMT) GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) – An orthodontist from Grandville was arrested in Frankfort on charges related to child exploitation, according to U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey. Thomas Shannon, 43, is an orthodontist who previously had a practice in Grandville. Shannon now faces multiple charges following an investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation of minors on Snapchat, according to Attorney VerHey. The criminal complaint alleges that a therapist reported a 16-year-old minor had been sexually exploited on Snapchat. Investigators identified Shannon as the perpetrator using Snapchat and CashApp records. Shannon hired a private forensic examiner to review his phone to prove his innocence, but the examiner discovered child pornography and turned it over to police, according to Attorney VerHey. Further investigation of Shannon’s phone and Snapchat records revealed additional minor victims, including one who was only 12 years old, according to investigators. Investigators said another minor victim came forward, stating she met Shannon online and was directed to video chat with him while engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
