Formerly California and now Bastrop-based social media app X is being accused of deserting its rights in the Twitter brand as a startup seeks to cancel the trademarks and use them for a “twitter.new” social media platform. A petition filed earlier this month with the US Patent and Trademark Office by the startup Operation Bluebird seeks to cancel the registration for the Twitter and Tweet marks, among others. Operation Bluebird petitioned to cancel the marks on the basis that X Corp. has “legally abandoned its rights in the Twitter brand, with no intention to resume use of them,” the petition, first reported by Reuters and Ars Technica, says. As social media users may recall, billionaire Elon Musk purchased Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion. Shortly after, he announced that “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app” and made several updates that significantly changed the look and feel of the platform. Other key moments arrived in summer 2023, when Musk announced that X.com would redirect to twitter.com and an X logo replaced the beloved blue bird symbol.
