AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – If an email suddenly appears in your inbox saying a company owes you money, your first instinct should be to assume it’s a scam. Honestly, that’s still good advice. That’s why millions of Americans have been suspicious after receiving an email about Facebook’s $725 million privacy lawsuit settlement. The emails, which began arriving last week, notify some users that they’re eligible for a second payment from the settlement. The settlement is real. But this is also exactly the type of email scammers love to imitate. Why Are People Receiving Another Payment? This isn’t a new lawsuit. Facebook agreed to a $725 million settlement in 2022 over allegations involving user privacy. People who submitted claims by the August 2023 deadline already received their first payments. Now, leftover money from people who never cashed their original checks is being redistributed. If you receive a legitimate email, it likely means you: Submitted a valid claim in 2023 Received your original payment Successfully cashed or deposited that payment About 28 million people filed claims, making it one of the largest class action responses in U.S. history.
