Jurors shown defendant’s Snapchat posts, bar receipts and blood alcohol results in deadly crash trial

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — Jurors heard some of the trial’s most anticipated evidence Thursday as prosecutors presented blood alcohol test results, social media posts and bar receipts in the case against the woman accused of causing a crash that killed two Lowcountry teenagers. Ashner Hollyn Nelson is charged with two counts of felony DUI resulting in death and two counts of reckless homicide in connection with an Aug. 8, 2024, crash that killed 17-year-olds Joseph DaSilva of Goose Creek and Samuel Oliveira of Summerville. Much of Thursday’s testimony focused on establishing the chain of custody for a blood sample collected after the crash. Jurors heard from the nurse who drew Nelson’s blood at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston police officers who collected and transported the sample, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division personnel responsible for receiving, storing and testing the evidence. After laying that foundation, prosecutors called a forensic toxicologist to testify about Nelson’s blood alcohol concentration. The toxicologist testified Nelson’s blood alcohol concentration measured 0.247 percent, a level the witness described as indicating significant alcohol impairment.
