Social media has been hit hard by the AI slop boom. No matter what platform you use—X, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok, or LinkedIn—it’s hard to avoid. Now, Snapchat is banning videos that are wholly AI-generated from appearing as recommendations on its Spotlight tab. Spotlight shows the top short-form vertical video content from the entire Snapchat community, regardless of who you follow. This doesn’t mean creators who are using AI as just one part of their creative process are banned from appearing in Spotlight entirely. Content that has been enhanced or edited using Snapchat’s AI creative tools will remain eligible for recommendation; it’s only wholly AI-made videos that will be banned. “As low-quality, repetitive, AI-generated content becomes increasingly common across the internet, we want Spotlight to remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people,” Snapchat says. Snapchat is by no means the only social media platform making these kinds of moves. Earlier this month, blogging platform Substack introduced an integration with AI writing detection tool Pangram to help users spot likely AI-generated text. They coined the term “claudefishing,” a reference to Anthropic’s chatbot Claude, in which writers try to pass off an LLM’s work as their own.
