Can’t Go Viral? X Reveals Its Inner Workings in GitHub Release – PCMag Australia

X has changed pretty radically since the days when it was known as Twitter, after it was acquired by Elon Musk in 2022, with many leaving for greener pastures at different social media platforms amid the shifting tone of the site. X has now open-sourced much of its code, which could make many elements of how its algorithm works much less mysterious. Earlier this week, the company made the source code for its “For You” timeline available on GitHub under the Apache v2 license. This means you can see the how and why behind certain posts appearing near the top of your feed when you open the app, and others not. In an interview with TechCrunch, which covered the release, X’s VP of Product Keith Coleman explained how the GitHub release includes “the core ranking code that pulls posts and ranks them for any given user and assembles the feed.” The code repository contains the systems used to filter out potentially problematic, rule-violating content, according to Coleman.
