Today, Sept. 15 marks National Voter Registration Day, and Maine election officials are reminding residents that it’s not too late to register ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. Maine allows eligible voters to register and cast a ballot on the same day, including on Election Day. Mainers can also register online through 5 p.m. on Oct. 13 or through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles through Oct. 27. After those deadlines, registration must be completed in person. “Registering to vote is the first step for every citizen to participate in our democracy and have your voice heard,” Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said. “We like to say that every day in Maine is voter registration day because in our state you can even register to vote on Election Day, but this holiday is an important reminder of the fundamental right to vote and have your voice heard.” Mainers can preregister beginning at age 16, though voters must be 18 by Nov. 3 to cast a ballot in the general election.
