Snapchat and behavioural science consultancy Mindscope have launched proprietary behavioural model, Reset Velocity, to measure how far and fast audiences are moving from public, “performative” social media towards more private, connection-led online spaces. New data revealing a long-term behavioural shift in how Australians discover and connect was shared at yesterday’s Snapchat Summit ANZ 2026 in Sydney, showing Australian audiences are increasingly seeking more private and authentic spaces. For the first time, real conversations have overtaken passive scrolling on Australian social media platforms, reflecting a structural shift in how social platforms are used. More than half of Australians (57%) have designated at least one platform primarily for private messaging, and 84% shared in a private chat or group in the last 24 hours – as opposed to 65% who shared publicly. Snap Inc. ANZ managing director Ryan Ferguson told the Summit the most important conversations about brands are no longer happening in public, but in people’s inner-circles. “The reset is clear,” he said. “Influence hasn’t disappeared from social.
