The Basics Score: Charleston Southern 1 – USC Upstate 2 Record: CSU (2-7-0, 1-1-0) – UPST (5-2-3, 1-0-0) Location: CSU Soccer Field CHARLESTON – The Charleston Southern women’s soccer team battled USC Upstate down to the wire Wednesday afternoon, but a late second-half goal lifted the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers at CSU Soccer Field. After a scoreless opening half, USC Upstate broke through in the 60th minute when Danielle Trovato headed home a pass from Cansu Kara to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage. CSU answered in the 74th minute as Danika Birch converted a penalty kick to level the match at 1-1. Birch’s fourth goal of the season gave the Buccaneers new life with just over 16 minutes remaining. The Spartans regained the lead in the 82nd minute when Lily MacCausland connected on a deep shot outside the box that went just over the hands of goalkeeper Avery Mason . The Bucs continued to push late, earning two corner kick opportunities in the final five minutes, but USC Upstate held on for the 2-1 victory.
