Flock Safety says its cameras can read license plate characters with over 96% accuracy in optimal conditions. In one California town, our investigation uncovered a very different picture: In two years, 71% of alerts for felony and stolen vehicles were misreads. In Roseville, California, that amounted to over 1,000 incorrect license plate numbers flagged to the local police department. Flock said reasons for these mix-ups included objects like trees cutting off plates and the tech confusing letters like E and F. Flock also said Roseville had requested an unusual setup for its cameras. The Roseville Police Department said officers must verify plates, so none of these errors resulted in traffic stops or arrests. We found that in other places, errors by Flock cameras, or a lack of verification by police, have put innocent people in harm’s way.
