Beware of false alerts on WhatsApp

The eThekwini Municipality urges the public to beware of false alert messages being circulated in WhatsApp groups, announcing water shortages and the likes. This follows after false rumours surrounding water shortages in Tongaat and surrounds loomed on WhatsApp. The municipality posted a media statement saying, “The city implores members of the public to refrain from fanning this disinformation. It causes panic more especially to the vulnerable members of the city such as the elderly. Let us all work together to nip this irresponsible behaviour in the bud. eThekwini uses its official communication platforms in the event there are challenges in providing basic services.” ALSO READ: Phoenix residents warned of money scam Should there be any power failures, water shortages or any service delivery challenges, residents are asked to verify the information with the municipality first before circulating such messages.
