Beginning in April, Palestinian-Australian photographer Sarah Bahbah began releasing a series of photos on her Instagram feed. The photos were sensuous and a little gauzy—like stills from a modern soap opera, filtered through a peach-colored screen. A woman, 13 Reasons Why star Alisha Boe, and a man, romcom sensation Noah Centineo, seemed to be enmeshed in an epic romance that played out on twilit beaches, on lushly planted patios, and in frothy jacuzzis. The whole thing was clearly staged, and yet it felt intimate and raw. “I don’t feel like a woman who deserves roses right now,” read one caption; “you don’t get the luxury of knowing what I’m thinking anymore,” read another.The series, titled Fool Me Twice was inspired by actual events in Bahbah’s life. Last year, her connection with a partner had come to an end after she realized that her own desires for intimacy and closeness weren’t being matched by her partner’s. “When I’m working on a series, I’m usually processing my experiences and my trauma at the same time,” she explains.
