Annie Gale — who had become Calgary’s, and in fact Canada’s, first female alderman in 1917 — successfully ran for re-election. ***** Another headline that day: The town of Penhold (about 130 kilometres north of Calgary) suffered a devastating fire that wiped out half the town’s business section. ***** Also on Dec. 15, 1921, the Herald carried a story about armored mail trucks being tested in Washington to help prevent mail theft. ***** Chicago bandits reportedly had a new way of robbing people — with a gasoline torch. ***** Gold rush fever was hitting B.C., the following story noted.
