BYRON, Ill. (WIFR) – Byron High School is the latest to be hit with a new artificial intelligence Snapchat filter popular with teens. About a week ago, Byron High School administrators began hearing commotion about a new AI filter making the rounds among students. “We didn’t know anything about it, we just heard about it,” said Byron High School Principal, Andy Donaldson. “Unfortunately, early this week we had a situation pop up which we had to handle and then we learned more about it.” The Snapchat filter uses AI to create images of people doing whatever the user asks it to. All the user has to do is type in a statement and it will create a photo within seconds, regardless of whether someone knows they are in the photo. “We want them to understand that what they put on social media can impact others,” Donaldson explained. School leaders said they have seen students use the filter to generate photos like ‘make them kiss’ and ‘make them fight,’ sending waves of uncertainty through the hallways of whether the photos were real or fake. “It was fortunately an isolated incident right now from what were working with,” Donaldson said.
