Flint Ferguson, Bernadette “Bernie” Johnson’s partner, stands next to the dart boards inside the Clubhouse Bar and Grill in Everett where Bernie would play darts regularly. (Olivia Vanni / The Herald) EVERETT — She was the barroom dart mom. Bernie knew all the dart players and made sure they had fun. Bernadette “Bernie” Johnson played darts until a few weeks before she died April 4, a month shy of her 79th birthday. Her celebration of life was a charity dart tournament on May 7 at the Clubhouse Bar and Grill on Evergreen Way in Everett. “My way of making sure everybody got to say, ‘Bye, Bernie,’” said her life partner, Flint Ferguson. “There was no better way to do what she loved to do and be around the people she loved to be around.” The tournament raised $2,800 for Providence Hospice and Home Care Foundation of Snohomish County and Make-A-Wish. Her favorite drink, Fireball Cinnamon Whisky, was served at the tourney. “Everybody got a shot of Fireball,” Ferguson said. » Read More

If every big-league start is like a opening a box of candy, No. 3 in the Bronx could probably best summed up as: Run, Forrest, run. One night after a sleep-deprived Yankees club returning late from a long trip outlasted the Cubs for a 2-1, 13-inning game, the powerful Yankees lineup woke up in a big way — clouting six home runs against the rookie in five innings Saturday night at Yankee Stadium on the way to an 8-0 blowout. That set a modern franchise record for most home runs allowed by a Cubs pitcher — the most since at least 1884, » Read More

They are also 7-0 under interim manager Rob Thomson. When Dave Dombrowski made the decision to fire former manager Joe Girardi, he did it with the hope that the team can still salvage a season that was quickly spiraling. “I think the most important part is we’re going to turn this around and I think we still have the capabilities to do it,” Dombrowski said at a press conference last Friday. “I think we need a different voice in the clubhouse.” As it turns out, appointing Thomson has acted as a reset for a club that Dombrowski classified as looking “tight” prior to the managerial change. The reigning National League MVP agrees. In an interview with Jim Rome on Friday, Bryce Harper acknowledged that there’s “a different vibe” with Thomson as manager. We’re just playing good baseball. » Read More

Then-manager Terry Collins expressed concern before a July 9 game that the Angels lacked intensity and emotion. Not for long. » Read More
