LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — The idea for Scottie Scheffler was to get a gauge on his game at The American Express, and all appeared to be in good working order Thursday. He made birdies on half of his holes for a 9-under 63 to join a parade of low scores that left him one shot out of the lead. Min Woo Lee and Pierceson Coody led the way at 10-under 62 on the Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West, the easiest of the three on the rotation. Scheffler played at La Quinta, where he didn’t miss a green until the 17th hole. He chipped that in for birdie. “I think the hardest part about these tests where you have to shoot so low is you can only shoot so many under par in a round of golf,” Scheffler said. “The easier tests, where the scores are crazy low, if you start falling behind it’s a lot harder to keep up, so you have to keep pace out here.” Jason Day had the most impressive round of the day with his 63 on the Stadium Course at PGA West,  » Read More

For Google or Apple, there is an NFT or a Metaverse. Here's a walk through the tech graveyard. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WHAT THE TECH?) — Looking back over the last 10-20 years, it’s easy to find technology that was either ahead of its time or ahead of reality that is now just part of the tech graveyard. Remember NFTs? Non-fungible tokens raised billions of dollars. Some digital art sold for millions. Digital art galleries were supposed to be coming. A year later, the bubble burst. And now? It’s as quiet as a real art museum. Hand-in-hand with NFTs was the Metaverse, a digital land where people were supposed to live, work, socialize and even go to church! Facebook even renamed itself “Meta” and spent over $70 billion chasing the future. The headsets still work and people still play games – but a virtual world, where people actually wanted to live in, never materialized. Then, there was Clubhouse. During the pandemic, the audio-only app was everywhere.  » Read More

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Adam Scott returned to the Sony Open for the first time in three years and jokingly said it was a good place to stop on the way back from Australia. He had other motives, of course. For the second time in three years, Scott finished outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup and is not eligible for the $20 million signature events. “So I thought I’d try to get a jump on things, rather than show up in February and chase,” Scott said. He tied for 40th in the Sony Open, and then flew to California for The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Otherwise, it’s going through the process of two years ago when he had to rely on sponsor exemptions for the signature events. Scott asked for (and received) exemptions into five of the signature events in 2024, and he can only wonder if it will hurt his chances going through another round of them. Scott is in a tougher spot than Jordan Spieth,  » Read More
