Facebook-parent Meta starts rolling out generative AI tools for all advertisers

Social media giant Meta Platforms META-Q said on Wednesday that it has started rolling out generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can create content like image backgrounds and variations of written text for all advertisers. The company started testing these tools in May, giving access to a select group of advertisers in a “testing playground”. The tools will be available in Meta’s Ads Manager and their rollout will be completed next year. The rollout marks the Facebook and Instagram owner’s first foray into bundling generative AI technology into its products for mining vast stores of past data to generate new content like prose, art and software code.Last week, the company said businesses will soon be able to use AI for business messaging on Messenger and WhatsApp to engage with customers.Meta’s portfolio of AI products includes its language model “Llama 2″ and an AI chatbot called Meta AI that can generate text responses and photo-realistic images.  » Read More

Facebook's new AI stickers can generate Elmo with a knife | Ars Technica

nose-dive into the future — Instagram, Messenger AI feature goes viral for potentially offensive user-created stickers. Benj Edwards - Oct 4, 2023 5:07 pm UTC Enlarge / A selection of AI-generated stickers created in Facebook Messenger and shared on social media site X. Less than a week after Meta unveiled AI-generated stickers in its Facebook Messenger app, users are already abusing it to create potentially offensive images of copyright-protected characters and sharing the results on social media, reports VentureBeat. In particular, an artist named Pier-Olivier Desbiens posted a series of virtual stickers that went viral on X on Tuesday, starting a thread of similarly problematic AI image generations shared by others. "Found out that facebook messenger has ai generated stickers now and I don't think anyone involved has thought anything through," Desbiens wrote in his post. "We really do live in the stupidest future imaginable," he added in a reply. Available to some users on a limited basis,  » Read More

Meta Plans to Charge Europeans for Ad-Free Facebook, Instagram, Source Says – VOA

WASHINGTON — Meta is proposing to offer European users subscription-based versions of Instagram and Facebook if they would rather not be tracked for ads, a source said on Tuesday. The idea, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes as the social media giant seeks to comply with a growing list of EU regulations designed to curb the power of U.S. big tech. The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg makes its billions of dollars in profit by offering advertisers highly individualized data on users, but new European regulations and EU court decisions have made that practice harder to do. The proposal has been put to EU regulators and is another example of big tech companies having to adapt long-held practices to meet oncoming EU rules. The source close to the matter said subscribers in Europe could pay $10.50 a month for a desktop version of Instagram or Facebook, or $13.50 a month for Instagram on their phones. Social media platforms have increasingly floated the idea of charging users for access to their sites,  » Read More

Meta explores ad-free subscription option for Instagram and Facebook – Android Authority

Edgar Cervantes / Android AuthorityTL;DR Meta is proposing to EU regulators an option for an ad-free subscription for Instagram and Facebook. For roughly €10 (~$10.5), users in the EU could use one account on a desktop without personalized ads, with €6 (~$6.3) extra for each additional linked account and another 30% app store commission on mobile. These plans are unlikely to be made available to users in other regions. Facebook and Instagram have been a crucial part of people’s lives for quite some time now. Facebook popularized the whole concept of social media, getting people attuned to sharing their lives with the public. The platforms have remained free for users, thriving on personalized ads instead. But what if you could pay to remove these ads on Instagram and Facebook? That’s an idea that Meta is playing around with, according to a report.According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has proposed to regulators a monthly subscription for users in Europe that will deliver an ad-free experience.  » Read More

Satire: Doing Chapel Hill housing by the (Face)book – The Daily Tar Heel

Editor's note: this article is satire. There exists a group on campus that can make or break your college experience. It can introduce you to your future best friend or your future worst enemy. It can point you in the direction of a nice four-bedroom off Church Street or a dingy duplex 40 minutes from campus. It can help you finally sell that lamp that you used to cram for physics late into the night (you failed) or urge you to buy another (maybe this is a sign to stop cramming by lamplight). The group is more exclusive than the Order of Gimghoul, it holds more secrets than the Church of Scientology and it exists on a platform even more underground than BeReal.  It’s the "UNC Chapel Hill Subleases, Roommates, Off Campus Housing & Apartments" Facebook group. You might be thinking, “But Hannah, the group has 33,487 members. That’s hardly underground.” Sure, that’s enough people to fill a small town, but the Facebook group isn’t a town: it’s an art form.  » Read More

Hijacked Facebook page causing big headaches for Glens Falls man – WNYT.com NewsChannel 13

When Ray Agnew’s not singing and performing – either at coffee houses or church services – he’s an administrator at Glens Falls Hospital. He also serves on the boards of hospice, the chamber of commerce and the Glens Falls Symphony. He’s a pillar of the community. However, his Facebook page is posting and selling fraudulent items. They include motorcycles, ATVs, a trampoline, TVs, game systems, even a hot tub.Agnew got a Facebook message from a friend saying he’d been locked out of his account and asked Ray for his help getting back in. They used the option of Facebook texting you a code. He gave the code to his “friend” and got hacked.Agnew realizes now that he was naive and shouldn’t have shared the code without verifying that it was really his friend who was asking for it.What he’s more concerned about is how the hackers have posted these fraudulent items for sale, looking to scam people using his good name. There’s apparently no depth to which the scammers won’t stoop.  » Read More

I was shocked to discover a vintage painting online that looks just like me — I had to buy it – NY Post

Jenny Smith was shocked to find her doppelgänger online — in a painting, that is. The mom-of-four was blown away by the discovery of a painted portrait that bared an uncanny resemblance to her curly red locks and “large” forehead, and she became determined to get her hands on the mysterious artwork. “Somebody posted the painting in a Facebook group in June, and a friend sent it to my sister and said, ‘This looks just like Jenny,'” Smith, 43, told Kennedy News, explaining that her sister had forwarded the link of the dead-ringer to her. “I was instantly like, I’ve got to find this painting — I’ve got to have her. It’s not like some random portrait to me because it looks just like me,” she added. After desperately hunting the portrait down for months, phoning various antique shops and enlisting the help of social media, the Columbia, Mississippi native was heartbroken to discover that the painting was hundreds of miles away in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. After seeing a photo of the portrait online,  » Read More
