More than 1 in 5 Republican state lawmakers across the country and 15 legislators in Iowa have joined at least one “far-right” Facebook group, according to a new report. Together the lawmakers sponsored 963 bills during the most recent legislative sessions, said the group that wrote the report, which describes the far-right efforts as anti-human rights. The Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, a think tank that defends democracy and human rights, identified 875 lawmakers who have joined at least one of 789 Facebook groups, including white nationalist groups, groups tied to QAnon, groups that spout conspiracy theories about COVID-19, and others that promote former president Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” that voter fraud cost him the 2020 election. The institute’s report, titled Breaching the Mainstream, lists all of the legislators identified as being part of far-right Facebook groups and detailed their legislative impact. “We knew we had a problem on our hands, but we hadn’t been able to quantify the depths of it,” said Devin Burghart, president and executive director of the institute.  » Read More

Pete DavidsonPhoto: Dimitrios Kambouris (Getty Images)After eight years on the show, Pete Davidson will be leaving Saturday Night Live after the conclusion of the current season, according to a Variety report on Friday.Personality wise, it’s a major loss for the show: Davidson is one of the biggest names to come out of SNL in the last decade, as much (or more) because of his high-profile relationships (Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande in particular) as for his comedy. It’s not a loss that is likely to be felt too deeply, though, as the comedian has probably missed more episodes than he’s actually appeared in over the last few seasons. He’s frequently been absent from Studio 8H while filming other projects, so at this point, it really does make more sense for him to take a bow. Frankly, Davidson seems to have had one foot out the door for years now.  » Read More

Facebook Inc, now called Meta, announced its dating application, Facebook Dating, in May 2018. There was real excitement, with people expecting a revolutionary dating app that would soon beat Tinder. And it is no wonder when you consider the size of the company, its technical capabilities, and most importantly the large volume of data that Facebook has collected about its users. After all, research shows that Facebook knows us better than our mums, so why wouldn’t it live up to its goal of creating “meaningful relationships”? But four years later, it hasn’t taken over the market – most people have simply forgotten about it. Numerous reports claim the dating app practically doesn’t function. Facebook’s own data suggest not many people use the service – about 300,000 in New York, compare with the claimed 3 million Bumble users in New York. As an online dating technology researcher, I had an eye on Facebook Dating since its announcement.  » Read More

Bruce Fein, a United States lawyer of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has urged Facebook to ban the Nigerian Government. Fein said Facebook should consider placing a ban on the Nigerian Government for alleged genocide and crimes against humanity perpetrated against IPOB and the people of the southeast. His appeal was in response to the call by Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, asking Facebook to ban IPOB from using the social media platform. Mohammed had said Facebook was not doing enough to bar IPOB from inciting violence using the platform. However, Fein accused the Nigerian Government of proscribing IPOB and denying the group the right to defend itself. Fein’s comment was contained in a letter he addressed to Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. The letter reads partly: “I am aware of the Nigerian Government’s high decibel clamour for Facebook to ban IPOB and its members from the social media platform for allegedly inciting violence. The clamour is predicated on the Nigerian Government’s proscription of IPOB as a terrorist organization in September 2017.  » Read More

The Nigerian government has said it currently has no plan to ban Facebook in the country. This comes after the government asked Facebook and other social media platforms to stop allowing the pro-Biafra separatist group (IPOB) to operate on the social media platform. While receiving a team from Facebook in Abuja on Monday, Information Minister Lai Mohammed said since IPOB had been proscribed and classified as a terrorist organisation by the government, Facebook has no justification for yielding its platform to the organisation. Speaking with journalists after the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the minister said its meeting with Facebook was robust and promising. “We had a very robust discussion with Facebook. Facebook saw our point and they said they’re going to do much more than what they are doing,” he said. “So if they do that, why would we ban them? We don’t ban for banning sake. We ban or we only suspend operations if for any reason, lives are threatened and they do not listen.  » Read More

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey’s leader flatly opposes having Sweden and Finland join NATO but the military alliance’s top official said Thursday he was confident that the standoff would be resolved and that the two Nordic nations would join soon. Turkey’s approval of Finland and Sweden’s application to join the Western military alliance is crucial because NATO makes decisions by consensus. Each of its 30 member countries has the power to veto a membership bid. “We have told our relevant friends we would say ‘no’ to Finland and Sweden’s entry into NATO, and we will continue on our path like this,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Turkish youths in a video for Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday.Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday he was ”confident that we will come to a quick decision to welcome both Sweden and Finland to join the NATO family.”“We are addressing the concerns that Turkey has expressed, because when an important ally (like) Turkey raises security concerns, raises issues,  » Read More

A decade ago, Facebook told the public markets that it was pouring money into smartphone apps because mobile usage was key to the company's growth, even though it did "not currently directly generate any meaningful revenue" at the time. That was in the prospectus for its Nasdaq debut, which took place ten years ago Wednesday and resulted in the largest IPO ever for a U.S. tech company. Facebook's $100 billion-plus market cap instantly made it one of the most valuable tech companies on the planet. But within three months the stock had lost roughly half its value as the market heeded Facebook's warning. With consumers flocking to smartphones before there was a proven business model for ads on the small screens, investors worried that Facebook's days of hyper growth were in the rearview mirror. We know how that worked out.Facebook is now more than 25 times bigger by revenue than it was in 2012. And by 2018, over 90% of ad sales came from mobile.  » Read More
