Facebook just saw a drop in users for the 1st time. Will Instagram follow? – National | Globalnews.ca

TikTok, the COVID-19 pandemic and mobile data costs in India all helped draw people away from Facebook at an unprecedented rate last quarter. The big question is when will it be Instagram’s turn? One forecaster, Insider Intelligence, does not expect Meta Platforms Inc’s Instagram social media service to lose users in the next three years. But its November estimates show Instagram’s growth in monthly users will fall to 5.8 per cent this year and 3.1 per cent by 2025 from 16.5 per cent last year.Instagram, which the tech giant acquired in 2012 for $1 billion, has been viewed as an antidote to slowing growth at Facebook, with revenue from ads on Instagram increasingly crucial to Meta. The company is putting those funds toward building out a new business selling virtual-reality goggles and related metaverse technologies. A decline in Instagram users and inability to raise ad prices could halt Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitions. After the Facebook owner reported missed quarterly earnings and a slowly shrinking user base on Wednesday, shares have declined some 26%. The company’s stock has also lost about $230 billion in market value since Wednesday’s close, which stands as the biggest wipeout in market value for any U.S. company. Twitter, Snap and Pinterest have all been trading lower, and Meta was trading at $237.76 when the market closed on Thursday. Meta’s market cap was previously at around $900 billion. Facebook parent company Meta met revenue expectations but missed EPS projections in its Q4 earnings on Wednesday. The social giant’s quarterly revenue came in at $33.67 billion, meeting analyst expectations of $33.41 billion. Racist Post in Alumni Facebook Group Condemned by Citadel, Latest in String of Incidents …

The Citadel is condemning a fake news release posted in an alumni Facebook group that made racist comments falsely attributed to the historic military college's administrators. The fake news release mimicked the look of the school's own press statements, using The Citadel's logo with the headline "Achieving Racial Equity: The Citadel to install African-American Water Fountain in the lobby of Mark Clark Hall." It included a photo, underneath the headline, of two water fountains, with a sign over one reading "African-American Cadets Only," emblematic of Jim Crow-era policies levied against Black Americans. Read Next: ISIS Leader Detonated Suicide Bomb Killing Family as Troops Closed In, US Military Says The post was shared in "The Citadel 'Old Corps'" alumni group, which is open only to cadets who graduated from the historic military college in Charleston, South Carolina, prior to 2000. Promoting a historical inaccuracy, the group says that moderators "will not tolerate the glorification of the hypocritical northern aggression that started the Civil War." Immediately, the post drew strong criticism from other alumni and was deleted.  » Read More

Why Facebook and Spotify are getting hammered in after-hours trading | TechCrunch

If you own stocks, bad news, you probably just lost money. Social networking giant Meta, better known as Facebook, is off more than 20% in after-hours trading. And Spotify, music streaming impressario and podcasting middleweight, is off more than 15% after the close of trading today. Both sharp declines come in the wake of underwhelming results from PayPal, which also saw its shares fall, and pretty good results from Alphabet. Alphabet’s strong Q4 performance is starting to look more like an outlier than median-indicator. Let’s talk Meta, and then Shopify, and parse out just what is going on. Meta’s expensive quarter and slack guidance In the fourth quarter, Facebook generated revenues of $33.67 billion, leading to operating income of $12.59 billion, and net income of $10.29 billion. The company also posted earnings per share of $3.67. How did those figures compare to analyst expectations? Per Yahoo Finance averages, analysts had expected the company to post $33.41 billion in revenue, and earnings per share of $3.84 billion.  » Read More

Meta plunges as Facebook users stall, forecast falls short – Los Angeles Times

Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. said user additions stalled in the fourth quarter and gave a disappointing forecast for the current period, raising concerns about the company’s future growth. Its shares plunged as much as 24% in extended trading.Facebook reported 2.91 billion monthly users in the fourth quarter, representing no growth from the third quarter. The social network is feeling the effects of increased competition for users’ time and a shift in interest to video, where advertising isn’t as lucrative.Meta said revenue in the current quarter would be $27 billion to $29 billion, compared with analysts’ average estimate of $30.25 billion. The misses come at a crucial juncture for the Menlo Park, Calif., company, which is fighting regulatory battles on multiple fronts and also trying to justify a costly shift in corporate strategy to bet on the so-called metaverse, the vision for an immersive internet lately championed by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. For years, it seemed like Facebook would never stop growing. Now young users — the future consumers of its advertising — are choosing platforms such as TikTok and YouTube for entertainment and community instead.  » Read More
