Facebook's entry into VR advertising isn't going too well

Facebook’s efforts to bring advertising to the Oculus virtual reality platform it has spent billions of dollars building out doesn’t seem to be off to a great start. The company announced last week that they were planning to roll out their first in-game ads inside the title “Blaston” from the prolific VR game developer Resolution Games, and just days later the game studio has shared that after hearing an earful from users they’ve decided to abandon the ad rollout. “After listening to player feedback, we realize that Blaston isn’t the best fit for this type of advertising test,” a tweet from the Blaston account read. “Therefore, we no longer plan to implement the test. We look forward to seeing you in the arena and hope you try the Crackdown Update that went live today!” This potential ad rollout had been particularly noteworthy because the ads were being tested inside a title from a third-party developer. Facebook has purchased a handful of VR studios in recent months and owns a number of the most popular Quest titles inside its marketplace,  » Read More

Cary dad's Facebook group, Dads Married to Doctors grows globally and gives back

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Cary dad Curtis Webster Jr. juggles a lot as a busy dad of three girls ages 6, 8, and 12."So for instance, later today I'm running into kids all over the place, they're in different swimming activities and we're getting ready for a trip," Webster said.Add into the mix that Webster's wife, Allison is also an emergency room physician in Raleigh, and keeping up with daily schedules alone is a full-time job in addition to his job in IT."She's sleeping right now," Webster said about his wife. "She works nights and weekends, and so just being that primary parent, especially during the day and working full time, and three kids with busy schedules, there's just a lot of moving parts."In 2016, just after the holidays, Webster was feeling isolated and overwhelmed trying to manage it all and so he took to Facebook creating a group, Dads Married to Doctors (DMD) hoping to find other dads in the same situation as him to connect and support each other.  » Read More

Fake ads on Facebook spoil real life fairy story

By Jon DouglasReporter, You & Yoursimage copyrightRobin Wightimage captionThe fairy pictures have started to appear in listings on many other websitesRobin Wight makes impressive wire sculptures of fairies and dandelions which have won the admiration of hundreds of thousands of people online. Photographs that he has taken of his artwork have appeared in adverts on Facebook. The only thing is, Robin does not advertise. The pictures from his website have been stolen by criminals who are using them to supposedly sell his sculptures as garden decorations to Facebook users around the world. In fact, users are directed to other websites to make a purchase and either get nothing for their money or receive a low quality product. It means Robin's small but successful family business in Stoke-on-Trent is being used by criminals in an international scam, and it appears that there is little that he can do to stop them. Speaking on Radio 4's You & Yours programme, Robin said the number of fake adverts was "colossal".  » Read More

Facebook will add 'satire exception' to its community standards

Facebook says it will update its community standards to clarify how it treats satirical content as a result of recommendations from the Oversight Board. The change stems from a case involving a user who posted a meme satirizing “the Turkish government’s efforts to deny the Armenian genocide.”Facebook had originally taken down the post, citing its rules against hate speech, but reinstated it after the Oversight Board said the company was wrong to pull the post. In its decision, the Oversight Board noted that Facebook has previously indicated it makes exceptions to its rules for some satirical content, but that policy isn’t outlined in its official guidelines. Now, Facebook says it will do more to clarify how it handles satire.“We’ll add information to the Community Standards that makes it clear where we consider satire as part of our assessment of context-specific decisions,” Facebook writes in an update. “This change will allow teams to consider satire when assessing potential Hate Speech violations.”The promise to update the language of its community standards is the only firm commitment Facebook made as a result of this case.  » Read More

Posted: Jun 17, 2021 / 04:43 PM EDT / Updated: Jun 17, 2021 / 04:43 PM EDT Appearing remotely from California in front of a Paris crowd on Thursday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his vision for the future of virtual and augmented reality. Virtual reality – computer generated 3D environments that can range from startlingly realistic to abstract wonderlands – has been on the cusp of wide acceptance for years without ever really taking off. Facebook was so wowed by early demonstrations of the Oculus Rift back in 2012 that it bought the company for $2 billion. It launched the $300 Oculus Quest 2 headset last October. Describing his vision for augmented reality, Zuckerberg says: “If I can’t make it to Paris, you’ll have a hologram Mark sitting on the couch next to you, or I’ll have hologram Maurice sitting on my couch here, in California. “And when I want to show you what the next version of Quest or the augmented reality glasses are that we’re working on,  » Read More
