A bipartisan bill pending in Congress would require social media platforms to first verify a company’s business credentials before allowing it to advertise. I was scammed by a company advertising on Facebook as Hugo & Rose Charleston. It appeared to be a well-established, family owned boutique with a brick-and-mortar store in South Carolina. I later learned I was far from alone. After paying $54 with my credit card for what I expected to be a beautiful red blouse made of high quality material, a month later I received a thin polyester shirt in a weird color with crooked stitching, cheap buttons without a store label or care instructions — nothing like the photograph in the ad. Only after a deeper online search did I learn Hugo & Rose Charleston was a company with no verifiable street address in South Carolina. My purchase had been processed through a merchant account in the Netherlands, and the blouse had been shipped from China. The company’s website domain had been registered just seven weeks earlier. I’ve scrolled through news of someone’s dog hit by a car, commentary on the latest mass shooting, the latest crazy Illinois law, our politicians acting in their best interest, local weather, an author’s new novel, a friend’s son’s wedding. I click on a reel and see a bridge fail, plunging a horse and rider into a rushing river. Facebook washes my mind, so I can’t think straight. I am outraged and frightened. But still I look. I've seen enough of the wickedness underpinning our country to know some disaster is billowing like a tornado warned storm. There’s an authoritarian noose wrapping around us. Early winter storms have transformed parts of California into vivid colors, with landscapes across the state bursting into bloom following early winter storms.   Sharing an image of the Temblor Mountains painted in vibrant coloured wildflowers in a social media post, the U.S. Department of the Interior said strong rainfall years have resulted in the hillsides sporting sweeping bands of color, creating dramatic ribbons of color. While most of the flowers are in bloom at the mountains, there is little display on the valley floor, the department said on its website.  “The wildflowers on Carrizo Plain National Monument are currently prevalent on the Temblor Mountains, with yellows and splashes of orange, with more sprouting every day,” said Monument Manager Johna Hurl. MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman Hailey Nutter threw her second no-hitter in three weeks Sunday as she only faced one above the minimum with Kentucky beating Indiana State 8-0 to close out the 2026 Blues City Invitational in Memphis. With the no-hitter, Nutter becomes the first player at Kentucky to throw multiple no-hitters since Kelsey Nunley did it in 2016 and the freshman has now done it in two of the first three weeks of the season on the heels of her no-no against Loyola-Chicago on Opening Weekend in San Diego. Offensively, Kentucky scored eight runs on 12 hits as the Wildcats had traffic on the basepaths all afternoon and went through three of the Sycamore’s pitchers. Officers from Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC) dismantled an organized group that used phishing to seize Facebook accounts and extract BLIK payment codes from victims. Arrest (Source: Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime) Eleven members of an organized criminal group operating in Poland and Germany between May 2022 and May 2024 were identified. Six suspects were placed in pretrial detention as part of the investigation. “Over 100,000 logins and passwords for the aforementioned website were seized, stolen by the perpetrators,” the CBZC said in an announcement. The group set up websites designed to mimic well-known news portals, often featuring sensational headlines such as the alleged death of a public figure. Clicking the link prompted a Facebook login window. When users entered their credentials, the information was captured and later used by the suspects to access accounts and carry out further fraud. Leaders are scheduled to decide next month whether to throw the city council’s top Republican out of office after he put up profanity-laden Facebook posts implying that “bullying and intimidation” by the Democratic administration caused another alderman’s death. Impassioned New Britain residents argued both from sides at a recent council meeting, with some calling for leniency for Common Council Minority Leader Robert Smedley while others demanded punishment. Smedley, who had posted under the name Colin Rober, attributed his posts to stress as well as being in grief at the unexpected death on Feb. 3 of Jerrell Hargraves, 36, a fellow Republican alderman. When the council convened, Smedley read a letter that he described as an apology, but never explained his rationale for the posts nor disavowed the insinuations. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Kentucky Swimming and Diving team ends the fifth day of competition with strong 500 freestyle performances from five Wildcat finalists, putting the men’s squad at eighth and women remain at twelfth. They now look towards the last day of competition on Saturday. Starting the morning off with the preliminary rounds, the 200 breaststroke round was highlighted by the prelim performances of Cayden Pitzer (1:54.99) and Adomas Gatulis (1:55.17), both qualifying for the C-Final. In the 50 freestyle, two Wildcats qualified for the B-Final. It was once again the freshmen, who have had an awesome SEC meet so far, Falemana Tuufui and Lysander Osman. Tuufui, the current program record holder (19.19), swam a 19.28 and Osman swam the third best program time at 19.30. The six Wildcats that qualified for finals in the 500 freestyle included Katy Jost, who won her heat in a convincing 4:46.59, good for the C-Final. Madi McGlothen also qualified for the C-Final in 4:48.60.
