Pennsylvania Turnpike wants to turn roadside land into pollinator habitat – Spotlight PA

This article was originally published by the Chesapeake Bay Journal , an award-winning nonprofit news organization that has been covering environmental issues in the Bay region for more than 30 years. Each summer, motorists traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as it passes south of Harrisburg will see a burst of blooms. Purple coneflowers, oxeye sunflowers, wild bergamots and many more nectar-producing flowers blanket the roadside below the Turnpike Commission’s headquarters there. In 2022, the commission established this pollinator habitat across 1.72 acres, divided into four test plots — each planted with a unique mix of wildflowers that together can support pollinators through their entire life cycles. They also seeded more plots on nearly six acres at the Hickory Run Service Plaza on the turnpike’s northeast extension (Interstate 476) in Carbon County. In the years since, they’ve added plots at five more locations along the turnpike, reaching a total of nearly 25 acres of land planted primarily with flowers and grasses native to Pennsylvania and the surrounding region.  » Read More

Second Facebook privacy settlement payment is coming soon. Here’s what to know.

June 5, 2026 / 10:56 AM EDT / CBS News Add CBS News on Google Some Facebook users may soon receive a second payout tied to parent company Meta's $725 million privacy settlement, according to the claims administrator and an email sent to eligible claimants. The payment stems from a settlement of multiple lawsuits against Facebook by users who claimed the social media network improperly shared their information with third-party sources, such as advertisers and data brokers. The lawsuits were sparked by Facebook's 2018 privacy scandal involving Cambridge Analytica, which scraped user data from the site to profile voters.  Meta has denied any liability or wrongdoing under the settlement. The first settlement payments were sent to Facebook users in September 2025, with a court filing stating that the average payment amount was $29.43. Payments were based on factors including how long someone used Facebook during the 15-year period covered by the settlement and the number of people who filed claims. Here's what to know about the second payments.   » Read More

Often the scammers will use URLs that at first glance such as www.fiffa.com may appear to be the legitimate www.fifa.com site. Among the many other counterfeit websites that the FBI identified are www.fifa-online.com and jobs-fifa.com. By using AI, the scammers can make their counterfeit websites appear legitimate. The cybersecurity company Group-IB identified more than 4,300 phony FIFA websites registered since August 2025. Tickets to the games are in high demand with more than 150 million ticket requests made to FIFA in just the first 15 days tickets were made available.  » Read More

After emotional debate, K-9 will remain with handler who left Swift County Sheriff’s Office

BENSON, Minn. — An emotional debate in Swift County has been resolved in what members of the County Board said they hope is an amicable if costly manner. The commissioners at their Tuesday, June 2, meeting unanimously approved transferring ownership of K-9 Red to his handler, Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Henriksen, for $5,000. “With all the parameters, all the issues it touches, this is probably the best result if it is amicable for everyone,” said commissioner Gary Hendrickx, who made the motion for the transfer. “A highly emotional subject,” said commissioner Pete Peterson. “I understand that and I understand protecting the county’s investment for the taxpayers.” But he added: “I feel the $5,000 is way too much.” The fate of Red, a Malinois-Shepherd mix originally from Slovakia, recently became the focus of debate when Deputy Henriksen submitted his resignation via email to the county’s human resources officer, while accepting another position. In his resignation email, the deputy asked to purchase the K-9 and the equipment for the dog for $1. Henriksen has been the handler since the dog was acquired in March 2022 at about 11 months of age.  » Read More
