Montvale mayor seeks dismissal of Facebook blocking lawsuit – Pascack Press

MONTVALE, N.J.—An attorney for Mayor Michael Ghassali filed a motion May 21 to dismiss a First Amendment lawsuit against him by a Park Ridge resident who alleges the mayor restricted his right to free expression on an official government social media page. The attorney’s motion said legal documents seeking dismissal of the lawsuit will be filed in Superior Court on Thursday, July 2, and oral argument has been requested on the motion. Christopher Botta, of Botta McCaskey LLC, Ramsey, attorney for Ghassali, states that the mayor’s Facebook page is not an official government page, but rather his personal page, which provides a variety of updates on community news and events. Botta also notes that the borough has its own official Facebook page. Park Ridge resident Howard Fredrics, chairman of PKRG-TV, which serves the Borough of Park Ridge, filed a lawsuit March 3 in Superior Court against Ghassali, alleging that Ghassali’s blocking of him from the Facebook page violated his First Amendment rights. Malaysia considering legal action against Facebook over ‘lack of cooperation’ to address scams

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia is mulling over possible legal action against Facebook for its “lack of cooperation” towards efforts to address online scams on the platform, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on May 24. Datuk Fahmi said he will leave it to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to get in touch with the social media giant on the matter. “In my opinion, legal action may have to be taken, but I leave it to the MCMC on this, and give them (Facebook) a last opportunity to prove that they do want to cooperate with the government,” he told reporters after attending a multi-agency retreat on anti-scam measures on May 24. Mr Fahmi said that 271,472 takedown requests for harmful content across all online platforms were made between Jan 1 and May 23 in 2026. Of this number, 91 per cent of the requests comprised scams and online gambling-related content. According to the minister, 81 per cent of the online gambling content and 58 per cent of the online scam content was on Facebook.  » Read More

We shared with friends, family, old classmates, made new friends, shared projects and mile stones, dumb jokes, and gossip.  Even better was reconnecting with people we had not seen in decades around our digital campfire. Popularity required the platforms to become enormous.  There were servers to be paid for, the investors expected returns, and staff needed to be paid. So the creators had the machine measure attention, note reaction, and examine how long  and what we looked at.  Our own content became the platform’s data for engagement monetization. And the platforms evolved and evolved and evolved, not because some evil genius wanted the destruction of civilization, but because the systems naturally optimized toward whatever kept people staring at the screen longest.  And demolition is profitable only for a few. And the crazy thing is that fear, anger, identity, validation, outrage, nostalgia, desire, or really anything that gets a rise out of you has become the true currency of attention. Our feed stopped feeling like connection when we didn’t provide acceptable or enough content,  » Read More
