Police warn ‘never send a deposit’ for Facebook Marketplace item

Sarnia Sarnia police are advising online bargain hunters to stop sending deposits for items listed on Facebook Marketplace as they continue to receive reports of scams on a daily basis. While these types of fraud investigations happen often and are not sophisticated, the local police service said they do take up a "significant" amount of resources. "...Fraud investigators require judicial authorization to access the information they require," read a media release. "In most cases, the investigations require multiple judicial authorizations, which often lead to another individual whose banking information was compromised." In these types of scams, the fraudster will ask the victim to send a deposit in order to hold an item. Police said no matter the urgency, there are several reasons why one should not send a deposit. Those reasons are listed below. 1. There's no guarantee the seller is legitimate. Even if it is someone you know, their account may have been compromised. 2. Deposits are irreversible. 3. Legitimate sellers don't usually ask for deposits.  » Read More

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today led a bipartisan coalition of 42 attorneys general in calling on Meta Platforms, Inc. (Meta) to protect people from fraudulent investment ads appearing on Facebook. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has found several Facebook ads impersonating prominent figures, such as Warren Buffett, claiming to offer high returns on investments. The fraudulent ads are luring vulnerable users into pump-and-dump schemes that have led to thousands of people losing hundreds of millions of dollars. The OAG received a report of an individual who engaged with a fraudulent Facebook ad, which claimed to be connected to a well-known investment management firm, and lost over $100,000. In their letter to Meta, Attorney General James and the coalition highlight the dangers of these ads and urge Meta to improve its process for reviewing ads before they appear on its platforms. “Scammers are using Facebook ads to trick New Yorkers and others across the country into investing in fraudulent schemes,” said Attorney General James. “Thousands of Facebook users have lost hundreds of millions of dollars to these scams and Meta must do more to stop these fraudulent ads from running on its platforms.  » Read

These “great” deals on Facebook are not from Amazon, Rolex or Nordstrom – Tom’s Guide

(Image credit: Shutterstock) If you’ve recently been tempted by a great looking advertisement on Facebook, keep scrolling. According to Cybernews, a large network of more than 4,000 domains have been impersonating dozens of popular brands in order to run fake ads across the social media site in order to tempt visitors to check out their scam websites. The aim of these threat actors is to steal money, or payment details, or both. Threat analysts at Silent Push have dubbed these scammers “GhostVendors” because they’ve discovered a way to circumvent Meta’s policy in order to cover their tracks.
