(Stock photo) The mechanism to make temporary genetic changes could be important for scientists hoping to modify mosquitoes in ways that help manage populations and prevent vector-borne diseases like West Nile virus without permanently altering wild populations’ genetic makeup. An article detailing their test results, “Engineering a self-eliminating transgene in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti,” was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ PNAS Nexus. The authors, Zach Adelman, Ph.D., and Kevin Myles, Ph.D., both professors in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Entomology, describe a method for programming the removal of edited genes within populations of mosquitoes over multiple generations. The method is a first step toward building safeguards for genetic modifications developed to control populations of mosquitoes and the vector-borne diseases they carry. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled in HiQ Labs, Inc. v. LinkedIn that automated web scraping of publicly accessible websites does not violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), even if the website owner objects to the scraping. This marks the second time in this case where the Ninth Circuit found that scraping public websites is not the type of “breaking and entering” into computers that the CFAA prohibits. For background, the CFAA is, at its core, a cybersecurity bill, which prohibits unauthorized access to computers and computer systems. It creates a civil claim for anyone who suffers damages or loss from a person who “intentionally accesses a computer without authorization or exceeds authorized access, and thereby obtains … information from any protected computer.” The term “protected computer” refers to any computer “used in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce or communication,” which effectively means any computer or server connected to the internet. The HiQ case deals with the issue of what constitutes “unauthorized” access of data stored on a publicly accessible website. It was a big win for the Bulldogs’ momentum after losing the previous two matches. The Bulldogs were hunting for that big win that could have them moving in the right direction as the GLIAC tournament approaches. “This was an important weekend for our team,” head coach Mark Doren said. “It was great to get a win before we head to the GLIAC championships. Our past two losses hurt but it gave us stuff to work on.” The work the Bulldogs put in paid off this weekend as they were able to get this huge win that meant a lot to the team. “It definitely was a big and important win,” sophomore Sophie Daavettila said. “I think it was a good confidence boost as well going forward into GLIAC’s next weekend. When it comes to social media, how you say it is just as important as what you say. Here are six ways to structure your LinkedIn posts to get more views and engagement. Great content can get lost in long, dense paragraphs. Most people skim their newsfeeds, especially when their viewing LinkedIn on their smartphones. So break up your information into short one or two sentence paragraphs like I’m doing here. Use paragraph breaks, bullets, numbers or headers to help the reader find a connection point as they scan the post. Also the first two to three lines of your LinkedIn post are the most important to capture your reader’s attention. US Highway 89 was re-opened yesterday afternoon. A new LendingTree study found the Evergreen State is the best state in the country to own an electric vehicle.Washington state has the third-most electric vehicle registrations relative to miles traveled, LendingTree found. This is a must for women to claim their rights. Non-registration could work to their disadvantage vis-a-vis illegal marriages, child marriages, bigamy/polygamy, deceit in marriages, crime against women in case of NRI marriages, difficulty to prove the factum of marriages. This was explained by officials from the Women Development and Child Welfare Department, Hyderabad. Lakhs of marriages were held during the two-year-long situations of frequent lockdown in 2020 and 2021. But, several of these newly-wed have not registered their marriage. As per the Telangana Registration Marriage office, a total of 3,829 marriages were registered in 2020, 5,704 in 2021 and 1,894 till 23 April, 2022 in the southern zone of Hyderabad. “Even the elite and educated women are not aware about the importance of having a marriage certificate and the difficulties they would face if they decide in future to part ways with their partner and claim their alimony,” said chairperson, FICCI, FLO chapter Hyderabad, Shubraa Maheshwari.
