A THUG viciously attacked a man at a block of flats and then posted a bragging picture of his bloodied victim online. Taylor Miller, then 22, showed up at the victim’s flat in Barry at just after midnight on September 20 last year. Prosecutor Emily Jermin said the defendant punched him whilst outside before tackling him to the ground inside the entrance hallway. When the victim was on the floor, Miller kicked him and stamped on him at least twice. The court heard that Miller posted a picture of the bloodied victim on Snapchat with the caption: ‘That’s what happens when you touch my family’. The victim was taken to University Hospital of Wales. Countries around the world have introduced age verification systems that are operating at “various levels of efficacy,” said Heidi Tworek, a professor of history and public policy at the University of British Columbia, shortly after the Canadian bill was introduced. They include Australia, which has age restrictions for social media, and the U.K., where there is a mandatory verification system controlling access to adult content. Australia’s rules apply to multiple platforms, including Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitch, X, YouTube and Reddit. But the rules have gaps. In a report released in March, the country’s online safety commissioner said that while millions of accounts had been removed or restricted, “a substantial number of children

They seem to watch every Instagram story, notice who has changed jobs on LinkedIn, or remember photographs that others have forgotten posting. Yet they rarely click “like,” leave a comment, or publish anything themselves. They are socially present but digitally invisible. This behaviour is often described as lurking: consuming social media content without visibly engaging with it. Why Do People Lurk Online? Although the word can sound secretive, lurking has no single psychological explanation. A person may remain silent because they are curious, cautious, socially anxious, professionally strategic, or simply uninterested in performing their life online. Someone may follow a university colleague on LinkedIn to learn about publication opportunities without announcing their presence. Another person may watch an old friend’s Instagram stories because it creates a subtle sense of connection, even though they have not spoken for months. Researchers commonly distinguish between active social media use, such as posting, commenting, and messaging, and passive use, such as scrolling. However, this distinction can be deceptive. Someone may spend seconds posting a photograph, while a silent viewer might compare, interpret, and remember it for hours.
