Durham literacy event gives away 15,363 books to children – EdNC

On Saturday, July 18, more than 3,500 neighbors filled Durham Central Park for our annual Summer Block Party — and in just three hours, children harvested 15,363 books to take home and keep forever. Let me put that number in perspective. Stacked one on top of another, those books would rise more than 600 feet into the sky — nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. But of course, that’s not where they are. They’re on nightstands and bookshelves, in backpacks, and home libraries all across our community. One mom told me, as her young son hugged a cherished new find, that he sleeps with his favorite book under his pillow every single night. Sign up for the EdWeekly, a Friday roundup of the most important education news of the week. Here is the moment I haven’t stopped thinking about. At one point during the afternoon, I watched three children: one, still in a stroller, completely absorbed in a book; two others who had simply plopped themselves down on the ground, books open in their laps. Around them, thousands of people were talking, laughing, moving, celebrating. None of it mattered. They couldn’t wait. They had stories to discover.

Jury convicts Altoona man for unlawful contact with minor

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- A city man with an apparent history of targeting juvenile females was convicted Tuesday afternoon of two felony offenses relating to the unlawful contact of a minor in 2023. After a one-day trial, a Blair County jury of eight men and four women deliberated about 25 minutes before finding Daniel Earnest Conway III, 40, guilty of a single felony count each of disseminating explicit sexual material to a minor and unlawful contact with a minor - obscene and other sexual materials and performances. The charges were brought after Altoona police, investigating a report relating to Conway, learned the Greenfield Township Police Department had an open case against him involving a 15-year-old girl. Conway was communicating with the victim through Snapchat and sent her an animated picture of a couple in the shower with the caption "shower time," the police report states. During the first and only day of Conway's jury trial, Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mays and Chief Public Defender Julia Burke agreed to stipulate to the jury that the Snapchat username mentioned in the police report belonged to Conway. Mays then called Kimberly Bem to the stand. Bem, a detective with the Blair County District Attorney's Office

Viral Twitch stream sparks debate about group dinners, splitting checks – Yahoo

A viral video has reignited a controversial dinner topic: the rules for paying the bill while out with a group. The discussion was sparked by a clip from Queen Naija's Twitch stream. The former YouTuber turned R&B artist was on vacation having dinner when the check, said to be $1,300, arrived. "Do you want to split the bill or pay for each meal?" Naija asked the table. "We can just split it by couple." The "Medicine" singer is seen on camera calculating what she and her fiancé, Clarence White, ordered throughout the night. In the background, it appears the other attendees are doing the same. Someone can be heard saying their food is complimentary. At one point, White says: "I just want to leave. Where's the tap to pay?" Moments later, he then turns to Naija, "I'm about to take it up there, and I'm about to pay. ... We've been here way too long." When he returned to the table, he added: "I don't like debating over the bill. I just pay it and be out. You know that's like one of my pet peeves. A lot of times I just pay everything." Uncomfortable Conversations: Did you get stuck

Queen Naija’s Twitch stream sparks group dinner bill debate

YouTube Gold: Kyrie Irving’s Best Game At Duke? Michigan State

Duke had an excellent chance of going undefeated in 2010-11. With a backcourt of Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving, and a frontcourt of Kyle Singler, Mason Plumlee, Ryan Kelly, Miles Plumlee, and Seth Curry and Tyler Thornton off the bench, it was poised to be vastly better than the 2009-10 championship team. A lot of that was due to Irving. Now he’s a surefire Hall of Fame player, but as a freshman, there were doubts. People thought that he wasn’t that athletic. He put a lot of that to bed early after lighting up Michigan State for 31 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury just a few games into the season and ultimately played just 11 games. It was enough, though: Irving was the #1 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and went on to become the Rookie of the Year. His career has seen some controversies, but no one seriously argues that he’s the best ball handler the game has ever seen and is bound for Springfield, home of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

How PayPal, Netflix, X, Facebook and YouTube lost their way – Chris Skinner’s blog

There was a time when the biggest technology companies knew exactly what they were. Twitter was where the world talked. Facebook was where friends connected. YouTube was where anyone could broadcast themselves. Netflix was where you watched great television without adverts, schedules or interruptions. PayPal was the easiest way to pay online. Each company had a clear identity. A simple purpose. They solved one problem exceptionally well. Today, most of them are trying to become something else and, in doing so, have lost their way. Earlier this week I wrote about PayPal's remarkable strategic journey. Here was a company that revolutionised online payments by making sending money over the internet effortless. Then it tried to become the operating system for commerce. Wallets. Shopping. Lending. Cryptocurrency. Rewards. Buy Now Pay Later. Merchant services. Consumer finance. Advertising. The strategy wasn't wrong, but somewhere along the way the original clarity disappeared. The platform became a portfolio. PayPal isn't alone. I also recently wrote about the decline of Twitter after Elon Musk's transformation of the platform into X.  » Read More
