The imaginary, destructive power of social media | Living | johnsoncitypress.com

It’s very easy these days to say that social media is toxic. People act in ways they’d never do in real life, because it isn’t real life. They act like feral wolves, because they can. The Twitter police don’t carry guns, and their badges are imaginary. In fact, social media is one big imaginary world, and we’re all way too wrapped up in things that don’t matter — the opinions expressed by strangers in public.Last week, Jon Gruden’s life exploded because of some private email exchanges that he had between 2011 and 2018 with a colleague. The emails included comments that were objectively racist, sexist and homophobic, and it’s hard to figure out how to defend them. You really can’t. Gruden doesn’t.But they were private conversations between two men, and they became public because of a wholly separate investigation into another individual suspected of wrongdoing. Gruden, who was not the target of that investigation, became the victim of what we’ve all seen over the past few years, something I call the Twitch Hunt. When the private comments became public, Gruden was essentially turned into a non-person. Matt Taibbi had a great column where he described Gruden as becoming increasingly invisible, like…

YouTube Nukes Video Of Lawmakers Talking Limits For Vaccine Mandates

YouTube took down a video posted by the House Freedom Caucus of lawmakers discussing the constitutional limits to medically coercive vaccine mandates for the novel Wuhan coronavirus. “Our team has reviewed your content, and, unfortunately, we think it violates our medical misinformation policy,” the company wrote without reference to the specific infraction, emphasis theirs. YouTube did not immediately respond to The Federalist’s inquiry over what provoked the censorship. The nuked video focused on a proposal from Kansas Republican Sen. Roger Marshall to defund President Joe Biden’s federal vaccine mandate by blocking the use of resources within the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or the Department of Labor for enforcement. The Marshall Amendment failed 50-50 along party lines, unable to capture the 60 votes it needed. The panel discussion censored by YouTube featured Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee with House Freedom Caucus members Andy Biggs of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Louie Gohmert of Texas, and Alex Mooney of West Virginia. An identical video is still up on YouTube from another account managed by the House Freedom Caucus while it remains offline on the group’s alternative page. In the video, Lee railed against Biden’s attempts to require companies employing more…

Twitter reacts to Carmelo Anthony’s pump-fake free throw vs. Warriors

Warriors Twitter reacts to Carmelo's pump-fake FT vs. Warriors Carmelo Anthony has seen a lot of NBA basketball. But the 19-year veteran did something Tuesday night against the Warriors that even he probably hadn't ever seen before. Sent to the free-throw line late in the third quarter, Anthony made his first attempt from the charity stripe. But on his second try ... he never released the ball. Instead, he pump-faked, which obviously is against the rules. The odd sight had many Warriors and Lakers players chuckling, including Anthony himself. Others reacted similarly on Twitter. MLB Twitter goes nuts when Dodgers come from behind to steal Game 3 from the Braves

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 19: Cody Bellinger #35 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts as he rounds the bases after hitting a 3-run home run during the 8th inning of Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium on October 19, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images) MLB Twitter goes nuts when Dodgers come from behind to steal Game 3 from the Braves. It looked like the Dodgers were slowly kissing their World Series hopes goodbye when they were down three runs leading into the eighth inning against the Atlanta Braves. But in true comeback fashion, it’s never over until it’s over and Cody Bellinger reminded us of that. With two men on, he hit a home run to blast the Dodgers into a late-game tie. Then Mookie Betts stepped up with a runner on third hit the ball into right field and suddenly the Dodgers were in the lead.Bellinger struggled all season, hitting far too close to the Mendoza line for comfort.Dodgers fans were beside themselves with joy at the comeback victoryBraves manager Brian Snitker will get the brunt of the blame for this loss, as his decision…
