Orca wants to give boating navigation its 'iPhone moment'

Boating is a hobby steeped in history and tradition — and so is the industry and those that support it. With worldwide connectivity, electric boats, and other technological changes dragging the sector out of old habits, Orca aims to replace the outdated interfaces by which people navigate with a hardware-software combo as slick as any other modern consumer tech. If you’re a boater, and I know at least some of you are, you’re probably familiar with two different ways of chart-plotting, or tracking your location and route: the one attached to your boat and the one in your pocket. The one on your boat is clunky and old-fashioned, like the GPS interface on a years-old budget sedan. The one in your pocket is better and faster — but the phone isn’t exactly seaworthy and the app drains your battery with a quickness. Orca is a Norwegian startup from veterans of the boating and chart-plotters that leapfrogs existing products with a built-from-scratch modern interface. “The industry hasn’t changed in the last 20 years — you have three players who own 80 percent of the business,” said co-founder and CEO Jorge Sevillano.  » Read More

The Underground Railroad Teaser: All Aboard Barry Jenkins's Long-Awaited Series

Well, Happy Black History Month to this. Barry Jenkins’s long-awaited adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Underground Railroad finally has a premiere date. In the official teaser trailer, Jenkins’s watchful lens focuses on Cora Randall (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman chasing freedom in the antebellum South on the near-mythical Underground Railroad. What she finds is “no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil,” a release explains. As she travels from state to state, Cora is relentlessly pursued by a bounty hunter (Joel Edgerton) who was never able to capture her mother when she left Cora behind years earlier. The ten-episode limited series also stars Chase W. Dillon, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper, Sheila Atim, Amber Gray, Peter De Jersey, Chukwudi Iwuji, Damon Herriman, Lily Rabe, Irone Singleton, Mychal-Bella Bowman, Marcus “MJ” Gladney Jr., Will Poulter, and Peter Mullan. Barry Jenkins serves as showrunner and directs all ten episodes. The Moonlight visionary has been sharing hints for months on his Vimeo, each one paired with Nicholas Britell’s soul-gripping score. The Underground Railroad premieres May 14 on Amazon Prime Video. Until then, watch the latest…

Inside Twitter's growing interest in Google Cloud

Twitter earlier this month announced it would be expanding its partnership with Google, moving more data and workloads from its servers to the Google Data Cloud. While Twitter doesn’t yet have plans to port its entire infrastructure to the cloud, its growing relationship with Google’s Data Cloud highlights some of the key challenges companies face as their data stores grow and how employing the right cloud strategy can help them solve these challenges. From on-premise to the cloud Before its interest in the cloud, Twitter had long been running on its own solid IT infrastructure. Servers and datacenters on five continents stored and processed hundreds of petabytes of data, served hundreds of millions of users, and had the capacity to scale with the company’s growth. Twitter also developed many in-house tools for data analysis. But in 2016, the company became interested in exploring the benefits of moving all or part of its data to the cloud. “The advantages, as we saw them, were the ability to leverage new cloud offerings and capabilities as they became available, elasticity and scalability, a broader geographical footprint for locality and business continuity, reducing our footprint, and more,” Twitter senior manager of software engineering Joep…

Twitter Stock Hits High On New Revenue, User Goals

Twitter plans to at least double annual revenue and hit 315 million or more daily active users in 2023, the social media giant said Thursday ahead of an investor day set for noon ET. The daily active users (DAU) figure reps a 20% compound annual growth rate from the 152 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2019. The goal is to see sales jump to $7.5 billion from $3.7 billion in 2002 by growing audience and gaining advertising market share in both brand and direct response. The new targets buoyed Twitter shares which  jumped as much as 12% to a record intraday high of $80.75. They’re trading up 9% late morning, outpacing the broader market and the rest of the tech sector. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is down 1.2%. DJIA is down by about 160 points. CEO Jack Dorsey will kick off the event, which will focus on “Healthy Participation” in consumer product priorities, policy and enforcement as well as financial metrics and faster development. Content moderation has become a major issue with Twitter at the fore, having permanently banned former president Donald Trump from the platform for his comments during and after the attack on the U.S. Capitol on…

YouTube Gold: Perseverance Gets Down To Business

It’s kind of hard to realize it, but really, the space race is still in its infancy. The US has been to the moon several times, but not for quite a long time and no one else has visited yet. Probes have landed on asteroids and comets, and of course, Mars. Significant photography of Mars started in 1965 when Mariner 4 flew by and sent back low resolution photos. As photography and bandwidth improved, we began to get a much better idea of what Mars was like, including this photo which startled people on earth before scientists showed that it was an illusion. But as time went on, the photos became crystal clear and when NASA landed Perseverance on the Red Planet this month, it did so with cutting edge equipment, including a mini helicopter that will soon go up to scan things the rover can’t see from the ground. But it’s already sending back tremendous images including this panoramic view of the landing site, Jezero Crater. Elon Musk, as you probably know, is planning to take people to Mars as soon as possible. It’s a daunting, daring idea. Can he pull it off? Will see humans on Mars in…
