IAC beats on earnings but sees ANGI Homeservices growth slow

IAC/InteractiveCorp. once again saw strong momentum for its Vimeo unit, though growth at home-improvement platform ANGI Homeservices Inc. slowed in January as the pandemic impacted demand for indoor projects. Vimeo’s revenue for the month of January rose 54%, marking a deceleration from the 57% growth seen in the month of December, but the rate was even with Vimeo’s November growth and ahead of October’s pace. IAC IAC, -0.26% reported the January metrics Wednesday while also delivering its formal December-quarter financial results. Vimeo’s revenue climbed to $83.8 million from $54.6 million in the quarter, though the revenue dynamics for the period were less of a mystery heading into Wednesday’s report given that they could be largely deduced by IAC’s previously disclosed monthly metrics. IAC shares were off 0.6% in Thursday morning trading and ANGI shares ANGI, -5.02% were down 5.4%. The momentum at Vimeo reflects continued traction for video software as the pandemic wears on. Vimeo has been one of the most significant growth engines within the New York-based media giant, and it has attracted enough outside attention and funding that IAC recently made the decision to spin out Vimeo into its own public company, a move that’s expected to happen…

IAC Earnings Beat Estimates as Investors Await Vimeo Spinoff

Updated Feb. 3, 2021 4:39 pm ET / Original Feb. 3, 2021 4:05 pm ET Order Reprints Print Article Text size IAC/InterActiveCorp. shares are up 25.4% so far this year. Dreamstime Internet holding company IAC/InterActiveCorp. posted strong fourth-quarter results, while investors continue to focus on the coming spinoff of the company’s Vimeo video-editing software business. At least in theory, IAC’s (ticker: IAC) report shouldn’t be surprising since the company reports results by product line monthly and previously provided a December-quarter update. Nonetheless, revenue of $848.8 million was up 27% from a year ago, ahead of the stale Wall Street consensus forecast of $814 million. Profits were $5.59 a share, dramatically above the Street consensus forecast for a loss of 55 cents a share, reflecting an unrealized gain of $439.6 million on the company’s 12% stake in MGM Resorts (MGM). IAC invested $1 billion in MGM in August; that position is now worth about $1.7 billion. In after hours trading, IAC shares were up 2.9%. Vimeo revenue was $83.8 billion, up 54% from a year ago, with subscribers up 24% to 1.5 million. Operating loss in the unit was $800,000, and adjusted Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) was…

What we know about Hive, the MySpace, Twitter, Instagram mashup social media app that …

Did you wake up this morning to see “Hive” trending in your social media feeds? Here’s what you need to know. Hive is a social media app that has been around since October 2019, but has only been noticed by most people within the last 24 hours. Overnight the app exploded in popularity and, as of the time of this writing, Hive is the No. 1 social media app on Apple’s App Store and the No. 2 most-downloaded app overall. Hive is still #1 !!! I’m not joking when I say I’m screenshotting and framing all this ???????????? These are such important moments for me that I’ve only dreamed of so for it to be reality is just.. my heart bursts ???? pic.twitter.com/RmaEsbYsYX — Hive (@TheHIVE_Social) February 3, 2021 At its core, Hive can be thought of as a nostalgic mashup of multiple social media apps. That is, aimed at people who are nostalgic for a time when social media apps were less bloated and algorithmically-driven. The app gives users a Twitter-like profile where they can post text, photos, or videos—with a heavy emphasis on the latter two (a la Instagram). And in a major callback to a time when…

Jerks on YouTube are digitally unmasking #SilhouetteChallenge videos

CultureThe body-positive #SilhouetteChallenge, which started on TikTok, quickly got hijacked and is leading to abuse.ShutterstockIf you use TikTok or Twitter, you may have noticed a deluge of videos recently where people, especially women, post recordings of their silhouettes to celebrate their bodies to a remix of Paul Anka's Put Your Head On My Shoulder. It's called the #SilhouetteChallenge. On Tuesday, according to The Rolling Stone, various channels on YouTube have published videos where they teach massive audiences how to remove the red hue from the #SilhouetteChallenge videos to view the raw post. It's a privacy nightmare, as many participants in the trend are in various states of nudity to capture their silhouettes. In many cases, these videos come with advertisements, which means they are monetized on the network. In one case, according to The Rolling Stone, a video sharing a tutorial on how to remove the red filter from the clips received over 233,000 views on YouTube. Input has asked Google for a comment on the issue and will update this report accordingly. What will YouTube do? — In order to see how rampant the issue is, I put "how to remove" in YouTube's search field and was given these suggestions…

I love your Twitter content but endorsing them Is not an accident, it’s not as if they’re a celebrityEven if you disagree, it’s still to political for an innocent drink company.— Andrew? What have we achieved in three years of Open Banking?

Three years have passed since the launch of the UK’s Open Banking initiative. On 13 January 2018, the second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) came into force, enabling regulated third-party providers to access a customer’s bank account information (with their consent). This was a significant milestone for the UK’s financial market. Open Banking was designed to increase competition and innovation in a sector traditionally dominated by large financial services companies. Banking APIs would break down the barriers standing in the way of data sharing, and enable new providers and technology companies to enter the market, offering better services for customers, and at lower prices. With technology at the heart of the initiative, the UK’s Open Banking system signalled a transition of power to the consumer. Soon, banking customers would have a plethora of options to choose from when it came to shopping around for the best deals. Given that we are entering the fourth year of Open Banking, now is the right time to reflect on the achievements already made, and what’s in store for the future of the initiative. Greater collaboration Collaboration has not always been a strong suit of the financial services sector, but the introduction of Open Banking…
